About UConn Athletics
UConn Athletics is one of the most successful athletic programs in Division I collegiate sports. With a thriving women’s basketball program and growing football program, UConn is a school that supports its athletics and uses the student comradery as inspirational fuel. “Bleed Blue” and “UConn…. HUSKIES” are common chants and phrases one can hear at a UConn game.
UConn football is a developing program at the university. The team plays home games off-campus at Rentschler Field in East Hartford, CT. The team originally joined the Big East conference in the early 2000s, but that would change come 2013. UConn Athletics shifted to the American Athletic Conference, splitting up a historical, epic Big East conference that contained deep and powerful rivalries. However, the departure and return of current Head Coach Randy Edsall would push forward the football program even more. UConn football has participated in the Fiesta Bowl and two other bowl games since its establishment.
UConn basketball is a major, successful tradition at the university. Whether it be men’s or women’s, there are streaks of excellence. UConn men’s basketball plays its home games at two locations: the XL Center in Harford, CT and on-campus at Gampel Pavilion. The team has won four National Championships and has bred some of the biggest NBA players. This list includes Cliff Robinson, Kemba Walker, Ray Allen, and more. Former Head Coach Jim Calhoun began coaching the team during the ‘80s. He would become one of the most successful and respected collegiate head coaches, retiring in 2012. Former UConn player and former NBA player Kevin Ollie replaced Calhoun. Their most recent National Championship win was in 2014 under Head Coach Ollie.
UConn women’s basketball, if possible, is even more successful. Head Coach Geno Auriemma has transformed women’s basketball due to his coaching abilities and success streak at UConn. The team has won a whopping 11 National Championships and holds two of the longest winning streaks in college basketball history, men’s or women’s. 111 is the largest amount of consecutive wins for the team, ending in 2017 in amazing fashion with a buzzer-beat, overtime shot by Mississippi State in the Final Four. The second record ended at 90 consecutive wins. Head Coach Auriemma began coaching the team in the ‘80s. Major WNBA players that have come out of the UConn women’s basketball team include Diana Taurasi, Rebecca Lobo, Maya Moore, and Breanna Stewart.
UConn hockey is another successful and popular sport at UConn. They play at the XL Center in Hartford, CT. The program began in the ‘60s and announced that they would join the Hockey East conference in the 2014-2015 season. Mike Cavanaugh is the current Head Coach of the hockey team.
