About Houston Athletics
Houston Athletics represent the University of Houston. Their mascot is the Cougars, and the teams are sometimes referred to as the Coogs. The school’s colors are red and white, and they play in the American Athletic Conference (AAC). One of Houston’s biggest rivalries is Rice, and the high majority of the school’s National Championships have been through their men’s golf team.
The Houston men’s basketball team will soon play in a redone Hofheinz Pavilion to be renamed Fertitta Center. Hall of Famers Hakeem Olajuwon and Clyde Drexler are both former Houston basketball players. Drexler returned to coach for the team after his career ended. The Cougars were part of the “Game of the Century,” the first nationally-syndicated NCAA basketball game. Though it’s been a few years since the time made it to the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, the Cougars have a sufficiently-successful history.
The Houston football program began in the 1940s. They played at the TDECU Stadium that lives on the same site as the team’s now-demolished Robertson Stadium. The football team has won 11 conference championships over their history. In addition, the Cougars’ lineups have included one Heisman Trophy winner. The team has competed in many bowl games over the past decades to amount to 24 bowl game appearances including multiple Cotton Bowls.
